Many mothers are surprised by how long postpartum bleeding lasts, how it changes over time, and what products are best for each stage. Understanding the three stages of lochia can help you feel more prepared, comfortable and confident during recovery.
What Is Lochia?
Lochia is your body’s natural postpartum bleeding and discharge that occurs after both vaginal and C-section births. It’s part of the uterus healing and returning to its pre-pregnancy size.
Lochia typically lasts around 4–6 weeks, although every recovery is different. The flow, colour and consistency gradually change over time, which is why postpartum recovery products often need to change too.
Stage 1: Lochia Rubra
What is the rubra stage?
The rubra stage is the first phase of lochia and usually lasts around the first 3–7 days postpartum. This is when bleeding is heaviest.
During this stage, lochia is typically:
- Bright red to dark red
- Heavy like a strong menstrual period
- May contain small clots
- Accompanied by mild cramping as the uterus contracts
This is the stage where many mothers prefer maximum absorbency and protection, especially during the first days home from hospital.

Stage 2: Lochia Serosa
What is the serosa stage?
The serosa stage usually begins around the end of the first week postpartum and can last into the second or third week.
During this stage, discharge typically becomes:
- Pink, brown or reddish-brown
- Lighter in flow
- Less likely to contain clots
- More watery in consistency

While lochia is completely normal, it’s important to know the signs that may require medical advice.
Contact your healthcare provider if you experience:
- Soaking through pads very quickly
- Very large blood clots
- A foul-smelling discharge
- Fever or chills
- Severe pelvic pain
- Bleeding that suddenly becomes heavy again after slowing down
