why mothers feel unprepared and where postpartum care is falling short

Summary

Postpartum recovery remains one of the most underprepared and under-supported phases of maternal care in Australia.

This report, based on responses from Australian mothers, highlights a clear gap between the care women receive during pregnancy and the support provided for their physical recovery after birth. Not all respondents answered all questions.

The findings indicate that many mothers feel unprepared, under-informed, and unsupported during the critical early weeks of recovery.

This report is based on survey responses collected from Australian mothers who gave birth within the past three years.

This report explores the experiences of Australian mothers to better understand where gaps exist and how postpartum care can be improved.

Introduction

While significant attention is placed on pregnancy and birth, the
physical recovery of mothers remains under addressed.

Postpartum recovery — often referred to as the “fourth trimester”— is a
critical period involving physical healing, hormonal adjustment, and emotional transition.  Despite this, many women report feeling
unprepared for the realities of recovery.

This report explores the experiences of Australian mothers to better understand
where gaps exist and how postpartum care can be improved.

Most mothers report only partial preparation when it comes to recovery items.

While some mothers reported having postpartum recovery items prepared, preparation was often incomplete.

Many had only a limited number of items, and even among those who had prepared, there was often a lack of clarity around what recovery would actually involve.

Most mothers receive little to no structured guidance for postpartum recovery.

While mothers receive consistent care and information during pregnancy, guidance for postpartum recovery is often limited or absent.

Many respondents reported being given only general advice more focused on baby, with little practical instruction on managing physical healing

Mothers are often left to figure out their own recovery after birth

Many mothers reported needing to identify and source their own recovery products after birth, often without clear guidance on what was needed.

This highlights a broader pattern of self-directed recovery, where mothers rely on their own research to navigate physical healing.

Postpartum recovery remains an under-supported phase of maternal care

Postpartum recovery continues to receive significantly less attention than pregnancy and birth, despite being a critical phase for both physical healing and mental wellbeing.

This report highlights a consistent pattern across Australian mothers: limited preparation, minimal structured guidance, and a reliance on self-directed recovery.

While experiences vary, the overall picture is clear — many mothers are navigating recovery with insufficient support and information.

Improving awareness, education, and access to appropriate recovery resources has the potential to significantly improve outcomes for mothers in the early postpartum period.

Recognising postpartum recovery as a distinct and important phase of care is an important step forward.

The fourth trimester deserves greater attention.
